What to do when illness strikes
Nutrition
When you are sick, no matter if it’s a minor cold, or a severe case of the flu your body needs adequate nutrition. There’s a reason that so many people think of chicken noodle soup when they think of a good feel better food. Now of course I’m not talking about any old soup off grocery store shelf, but a homemade soup with real, whole food ingredients. Bone broth has many healing properties and is one of the best things you can eat when sick. Read more about the benefits of bone broth here. Mix in some healing herbs like ginger, garlic, and tumeric with some nutritious veggies and you’ve got your self a delicious recipe for healing.
It’s easy to default to fast food or comfort food when sick, but that’s the last thing your body needs. Try to stay away from junk food and eat real, whole food instead.
Hydration
Staying hydrated is also extremely important. Be sure to drink plenty of water and to replenish electrolytes, but stay away from sports drinks and the like because they are full of nasty ingredients that won’t do you any good. Make your own electrolyte drink with pink salt, cream of tartar, lemon juice, and pure maple syrup. Or buy a natural electrolyte powder like this one from Earthley Wellness. *Page contains affiliate links*
Rest
To quote the kids show Daniel Tiger “when your sick rest is best, rest is best” If you’ve seen that episode you probably just sang that didn’t you? But it is true. Whether you sleep or not your body needs rest when dealing with any illness.
Get outside
Since resting is important while sick I’m not talking about going outside to play or go run around. But sitting outside in the fresh air and sunshine will help you feel better and promote restful healing.

Essential oils
Our final must have for our natural remedies are essential oils. Essential oils provide several healing properties and can promote a calm and relaxing environment to better help you to test and recover. We love to use lavender, tea tree oil, and peppermint to use as a homemade chest rub. Just be sure to use proper dilution with a carrier oil and make sure the oils you are using are safe for kids if necessary. Check out my favorite essential oil company here.
